How to Build and Compile a Simple BD-J Xlet for Beginners

This guide shows you how to create, compile, package, and test a simple BD-J Xlet using a ready-made template.

Download the template here:
https://github.com/aefirestone/BDMV-Template-for-Simple-Xlets

Step 1: What You Need

  • Java 8 JDK – Download Adoptium Temurin 8. Newer Java versions are not recommended.
  • BDMV Template – Download the ZIP from the GitHub link above.
  • ImgBurn – Free tool to create the final ISO.

Step 2: Set Up Your Folders

After downloading and unzipping the template, create three folders on your desktop:

  • BDJProject ← Put the SOURCE folder contents here
  • BDJProjectBDMV ← Put the BDMV folder here
  • ISO Output ← This is where your finished ISO will go

Step 3: Compile the Xlet

Inside the BDJProject folder, double-click BuildXlet.bat.

This will compile the Hello World Xlet into .class files using Java 1.3 compatibility.

Step 4: Package into a JAR

Open Command Prompt and run these two commands one by one:

Code
cd C:\Users\YOURNAME\Desktop\BDJProject
jar cvf 00000.jar -C src .

This creates 00000.jar.

You will need to sign your JAR file in order for your Xlet to play, please follow this tutorial on how to sign your JAR file
🠊  https://www.blu-ray.org.uk/p/how-to-sign-bd-j-jar-simple-guide-for.html

Step 5: Put the JAR into the BDMV Structure

Copy the newly created 00000.jar into this folder:

BDJProjectBDMV\BDMV\JAR\

Step 6: Create the ISO with ImgBurn

  1. Open ImgBurn.
  2. Select Create image file from files/folders.
  3. Click “Browse for a folder” and select your BDJProjectBDMV folder.
  4. Choose where to save the ISO (use your ISO Output folder).
  5. Click the Build button.
  6. Accept the default volume label and “BD Video” detection.

Step 7: Test Your Xlet

  • Software players: Open the ISO in VLC or PowerDVD
  • Hardware players: Open the ISO on Dune HD media player or burn/play a BD-RE on a Blu-ray player

Important Notes

  • For simple single-Xlet projects, do not modify these files:
    • MovieObject.bdmv
    • Index.bdmv
    • The BDJO file
    • The .perm file
  • The BD-J.jar is required by BuildXlet.bat to compile to Java 1.3 bytecode.
